Common Core: Math

How is math education different under the Common Core?

THE SHIFTS IN MATH

  1. Focus strongly where the Standards focus
  2. CoherenceThink across grades, and link to major topics within grades
  3. Rigor: In major topics pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application with equal intensity

We hear from educators across the country that understanding the Shifts makes their lives easier by clarifying the key changes required by the Standards. These resources support a foundational understanding for the CCSS.

Educators speak about the Shifts Card Template

Carrie Massey

High School Teacher, Hardin County, KY
"I was given this laminated, pocket-sized shift card by my curriculum specialist when she first began PD on the move to the CCSS. At the time - more than a year ago - the CCSS seemed daunting, but I was excited to learn more. The tiny Shift Card Template for ELA, which didn't mean much to my overcrowded brain at the time - became more useful as I processed the shifts and began to have a better, in-depth understanding of them. I have used that card in multiple PLC meetings and chats with colleagues, and especially at the conference in Philadelphia. It's a wonderful resource to focus the shifts and a manageable way to begin processing the key components of the CCSS in each subject area. I have appreciated having it and refer to it often, and I plan to use it again as a facilitator at an upcoming Teacher Leader event in Louisiana, where more than 2000 teacher leaders from around the State will meet to discuss and lead the CCSS implementation in the coming years. I plan to print some for my group, and hopefully, they will find it as useful as I have."
